Whakarāpopototanga:During a tour of duty as a training vessel for seamen of the Royal Australian Navy H.M.S. Challenger visited all the Australian capital cities, many New Zealand ports (survey work around the west coast of the South Island), the Cook Islands, the Kermadecs and Fiji. Daily life aboard ship is described in great detail. Also described in detail are museums, churches, botanic gardens and other places and events which took place or were visited during shore leave. The 3 volumes comprising the journal are illustrated with Norton's own art work, incorporating local postage stamps, programme cards and newspaper clippings, as well as many photographs taken by him and other crew members.
