| 520 | |a Invisible Scars explores the topic of Child Sexual Abuse (“CSA”) through the eyes of Johnna Janis. Johnna is a woman, mother, wife, and friend who appears strong and confident. She candidly reveals the life-long struggles she has faced from the events that have haunted her since childhood. With the assistance of experts and leaders in the fight against CSA, she comes to understand how her emotional trauma has negatively impacted her self-image, her inter-personal relationships, and nearly all significant decisions in her life. Armed with this awareness, she explores tools and resources which are available to help CSA victims overcome the debilitating effects of their childhood experiences. This film also presents an opportunity for the public to become educated, to understand the prevalence and devastating impact of child sexual abuse in our society, and to support efforts to help prevent other children from becoming victims.. Every child deserves to be loved, and the opportunity to lead a happy, healthy and successful life. Unfortunately, statistics continue to demonstrate that childhood sexual abuse is rampant in our society. Those children who are innocently victimized by the actions of others carry 'invisible scars' and adverse childhood experiences throughout their adult lives. Admittedly, child sexual abuse is difficult for people to talk about. It causes fear, shame, and anxiety, all of which promote silence. Predators rely on that silence to remain undetected and perpetrate their abuse, while imposing a lifetime of suffering on their innocent victims.. One in four girls and one in six boys will be sexually abused by the age of 18 in the United States. There are also 39 million adult survivors of child sexual abuse. Sadly, experts agree that the above statistics are grossly under-reported estimates, because only 38% of children disclose the fact that they have been sexually abused. Realistically, we all know someone that has been affected by child sexual abuse. You may not be able to identify who they are, but there are survivors close to you in your life.. The first step in the fight against this silent epidemic is to raise awareness of the devastating traumatic impact on its victims; to shatter the silence that protects the perpetrators.
