Summary:The independent Republic of Nauru was once rich from the phosphate mined there but now there is little phosphate left and the the island has squandered its wealth. The island is dying. The population is adrift, crushed by alcoholism and diabetes. To survive, Nauru has resorted to generating income by dubious means, such as money laundering for the Russian Mafia.
