Advanced Search Tips

Search Boxes

In each search box you can type the words or phrases you want to search for. Within each box search operators can be used to enhance your search and to combine search words and phrases. Multiple boxes are combined with the AND Boolean operation.

Search Fields

Each box has a drop-down next to it that lets you specify the type of data you are searching for (author, title, subject, etc.). You can mix and match search types however you want.

Example Searches

will find works about utilitarianism that have any of the words introduction, guide/guidebook/etc., handbook, encyclopedia/encyclopaedia in their titles.

will find works by authors with the name Todd about contract.

will find literary criticism written by C. K. Stead.

will find literary criticism about by C. K. Stead.

will find literary criticism about C. K. Stead written by the author himself.

will find literary criticism about C. K. Stead not written by the author himself.

Search Groups

Search groups can be used to structure more complex searches. For example

will find results combined from any of the search statements across all the search groups because the drop-down Match: ANY Groups is selected.
